Prague, Czech Republic - Department of Psychology

Charles University was founded in 1348 as the first Studium generale north of the Alps and east of Paris. Nowadays, Charles University consists of 17 faculties. Almost 50 000 students study in 300 programs. 

The Faculty of Education, established in 1946, is one of the biggest faculties at Charles University. Most study programs are focused on teacher training. However, some other study programs, including psychology, are provided too. 

The Department of Psychology offers the Bc, MA, and Ph.D. study programs in psychology. The department is also responsible for the courses of psychology in all teacher training programs at the Faculty of Education.  

The Department consists of 19 academicians and 15 external psychologists who teach courses orientated on practice in psychology. Although the study programs cover all fields of psychology, the main focus is on educational and school psychology, developmental psychology, and cognitive psychology. Also, the research projects are orientated in these areas.

Irena Smetackova works as an associate professor at Faculty of Education, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic. Her background covers psychology, pedagogy and sociology. Currently, she is the head of the department of psychology.
