Giessen, Germany - Political Science department

The department of political science consists of nine professorships and belongs to the major ones of its kind in Germany. The department focusses on the fields of democracy and democratization studies, the methodology of political science and socialization processes, political theory, gender studies, political economy, German political system, international relations, and international integration focusing on Eastern Europe. This wide range of research topics allows for a productive discussion and exchange between researchers, lecturers, and students concerning a multitude of prevailing political issues and topics of research.

Research at our department is conducted by our professors and researchers who are working for individual as well as numerous external founded projects. Further, international research partnerships as well as internal cooperation are additional central pillars of our work. Moreover, all members of our department maintain close collaboration ties with a multitude of international partners through many research projects and clusters. Our internal networking takes place within a large number of research sections as well as study centers.

Concerning the area of teaching, the Department of Political Science offers a subject-specific education for future teachers as well as for a diverse range of Bachelor and Master degree courses. For the respective Bachelor of Arts Social Sciences, we closely collaborate with the Department of Sociology. The Master of Arts Democracy and Governance is solely taking place at the Department of Political Sciences and interlinks Democracy and Governance in the context of the multi-level system.

Simone Abendschön is an outstanding researcher in the field of political socialization with a focus on the early political socialization processes of children, youth, and adolescents with a tradition of political science and attitudinal research.
